Master/Slave: Not politically correct!

Polit­i­cal cor­rect­ness invades tech­nol­ogy. Los Ange­les offi­cials have asked that man­u­fac­tur­ers, sup­pli­ers and con­trac­tors stop using the terms "mas­ter" and "slave" on com­puter equip­ment, say­ing such terms are unac­cept­able and offensive.

Appar­ently this news is slightly old hat, but intrigu­ing nev­er­the­less! Any techie worth his or her salt knows of master/slave model for com­mu­ni­ca­tion pro­to­col. Well, Los Ange­les thinks that's inappropriate!

    I sup­pose I can under­stand some "dumb as a brick" jan­i­tor see­ing two big white lables that say mas­ter and slave on them not under­stand­ing them… but rather than rolling over and whin­ing about it, why not take a lit­tle time to learn WHY they are labeled that way. I know in HDD's at least, that the slave drive is con­trolled by the mas­ter drive (hince the slave name)… The sad­dest part of this is that most peo­ple do not give a rat's rear-end about this crap. This is just a very loud (and very igno­rant) minor­ity of the minor­ity yelling about what they are too lazy to wrap their brains around. I thought democ­ra­cies were for the majority?

    You think you Yanks have stu­pid­ity cor­nered? Come to Canada, the land where government´s cow­tow to minori­ties and immi­grants. Where free­dom was never fought for and the elec­torate votes politi­cians out, not in. Where if some­one doesn´t like what you say about them, you can be called in front of a human rights tri­bunal and pros­e­cuted under hate crimes laws. Where a polit­i­cal party elected to a major­ity gov­ern­ment becomes in effect a dic­ta­tor­ship. Where the police forces con­sider the peo­ple to be pub­lic servants.

    Yeah, I know there are worse places to live but, it´s still wrong and it´s still not good enough. The thugs and polit­i­cally agres­sive can get away with this crap only when there´s enough food to go around.
